Bishop Mark's Visit to St Vincent's

All of the pupils and staff were delighted to receive a visit from Bishop Mark today, who came to talk to the children about the importance of offering our day to the Lord and also to talk to the children about their vocation. The children also asked Bishop Mark some very interesting questions, including how he felt when he was told he would become the Bishop and whether he wanted to become the next Pope!
At the end of the assembly, our head girl and boy, Ana and Thomas, presented Bishop Mark with a special book of prayers made by the children in dedication of Bishop Mark's 'Year of Vocations'. He was also presented with special books from the Infants and the Nursery and after a tour of the school, Bishop Mark was quick to say how wonderful an experience he had with us.

Over the last few weeks we have been thinking about using the Internet safely and most effectively. This is because we will soon be using search engines (like Google) to build our own Wikipedia pages! Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia, which is free to use but also open for anyone to edit.
It is very important to use the Internet in a safe way, so we have created our own informative posters to give advice to other pupils in the school.

Maths for Mums and Dads Evenings

Thank to all of the parents who attended the 'Maths for Mums and Dads' evenings that have been held in both departments. Also, thank you very much for the completing feedback sheets for both sessions.

On Monday 12th January we welcomed Frank Letch to the Infant Department to speak to the children and to work with Year 2. Frank was born without a right arm and with only a small part of his left arm. He has worked in a number of voluntary roles helping people with disabilities and has recently been appointed an MBE for services to people with disabilities and to the wider community in Crediton, Devon where he lives and works as Mayor. Frank was also chairman of 'Reach', an association for children with upper limb deficiency.
Frank spoke to all of the children about difference and inspired both staff and children with stories about his life. He showed Year 2 how to peel and chop a potato without using your arms and showed his expertise with a tennis racket. He ate lunch with the children and answered further questions before driving back to Devon.
The children made Frank a special card to congratulate him on being awarded the MBE and presented him with a cheque for £100 for 'Reach'.

The Three Wise Men have started their journey guided by a wondrous star. They will be travelling through the Infant department into each classroom as they make their way to the stable to greet the new born King. They will start their journey this Monday 1st December at the start of Advent. Infants please be on the look out for the Three Wise Men ...they may be closer than you think!
We will keep you updated on their whereabouts.

Our annual Christmas Fair was on Saturday 22nd December and it was as popular as ever! Santa's Grotto and all of our favourite stalls were present; we even had a new attraction in "The Orchard Children's Spa" where the face painting was spectacular. Thank you to all of our visitors and helpers, who are all crucial to the success of this event. This year we raised over £8,500 for our school.

On the last day of this half term the whole school learnt about different cultures from around the world. Year Four focused on the continent of Africa, and lots of the countries within it.
We were very lucky to have a visit from Mrs Spragg and Mrs Cropper, who are originally from Malawi. They taught us about some of their cultural traditions including dress and music.
We had lots of fun listening and chanting to the African "talking drum". A talking drum is an African instrument known for its hourglass shape. Originating from West Africa, the talking drum is an instrument that can mimic the tone, rhythm, intonation, and stress of human speech.
Our favourite part of the day was when we got to try lots of traditional African cuisine. We sampled delicacies including fried plantain (Dodo), okra, papaya, spicy rice, fried chicken and various stews. The food (prepared by Mrs Spragg and her friends) was so delicious that Mrs Gough asked for "seconds"!
Thanks to everyone involved in making our day so memorable. What a fantastic learning experience for the lucky Year Four children.
United Nations Day - Infant Department

We had a wonderful celebration of United Nations Day on Friday 24th October. Nursery and Reception joined together to learn about Spain and France; sharing songs and rhymes and joining in a parade where they waved their flags and proudly sported their hats.
Year 1 and 2 enjoyed a range of different activities in the morning and had a special parade in the afternoon. Kate McMichael from Year 2 shared information and artefacts from the Netherlands where she lived with her family.
The children had a very enjoyable day and parents have given excellent feedback on the impact of the day on their children. We were delighted to receive the following feedback from one of our parents -
"I would like to say how much the boys have enjoyed United Nations Day and they have come home with various foreign language phrases and information this week! It seems to be a very well organised and successful initiative each year"

On Tuesday 21st October teacher Kam Palmer visited the Infant department to talk about Indian culture and traditions. The children were enthralled by her range of artefacts and by her stories and songs. Year 2 were able to study the artefacts in detail as well as learn aspects of Indian dance. Kam will be returning in November to teach the child how to make chappatis and an authentic Indian curry.
Kam will be in the Junior department on Thursday 23rd October where she will take the children on an imaginary tour of India once again through dance, song and discussion. She will work with different classes on cooking activities, dance and examining a range of artefacts.

The Girls' Football League got off to a flying start today for the reigning champions, St. Vincent's, with three straight wins. Playing back to back games, the girls showed attacking flair, vision, commitment and a competitive streak which saw them score 10 goals and concede only won.
Scarlet Egan was a fabulous goalkeeper even though she had to spend a lot of time watching the game.
Sophie and Cosi were assured in defence, showing good awareness and movement to stop the attacks.
Ana gave a Captain's performance, switching from position to position and giving the team strength throughout.
The midfield, led by Florence and Rebecca, was packed with grit and pace, quashing most attempts by the opposition to attack. Lottie and Izzy were impressive on their debuts for the team, tearing up and down the wings.
The star of the show was Harriet, who attacked throughout with determination and passion, scoring 6 of the team's goals (including one from far out that lobbed the goalkeeper).
All-in-all, Mr. Blain left the field with a huge smile and pride at the girls' excellent attitude to the game and to the opposition.

Staff Macmillan Coffee Morning

Thank you to all staff in the Infant and Junior department who baked and bought cakes and those who contributed to making the event a success. Staff enjoyed a cup of freshly brewed coffee or tea during their morning break along with a slice of cake! Amount raised to be posted shortly ....

Football Trials were held today

Boys and Girls in Year 5 & 6 were invited to take part in a Football trial at lunchtime today. Both Mr Blain and Mr McCann were stunned at the high quality football on display. Many children have been chosen for the season's first fixtures which begin this Friday.
This year St. Vincent's will have two boys' teams and one girls' team in the Trafford league. As Champions, the girls have a lot to play for...with the excellent passing and defending on show today, there is a high level of optimism around the school already!

Our new junior library is open!
Every child now has the opportunity to choose from a variety of fiction and non-fiction books that have been chosen by everyone in the school community.
Each class will have an opportuniuty to visit the library each week in order to change their books. The Library will also be open during lunchtimes on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for the extra keen readers in the school.

This year we have an exciting new Computing curriculum. Our first challenge was to be "Software developers".
We have been using "Scratch" to learn about computer progamming, and create our own interactive animations using a simple building-block approach.
