Mrs McDuff's Class: News items

Engineering visit

Date: 29th Nov 2019 @ 1:34pm

This week, we were very lucky to have a visit from Civic Engineers. They came to talk to us about structural and civil engineering. We looked at our local area of Altrincham and in particular the car park on Regent Road. We were able to learn about the process of planning and what is involved. We moved to work in groups collaborativey to create a tall tower. We had to think about making sure it had a solid base and used cellotape to ensure it stayed together. We then planned a healthy street. We tried to include green areas and accessilibily for all. We included cycle pathways to limit the number of cars. Some children were awarded for their team spirit and innovative ideas. The pencils we were given were sustainable and once we have finished with them we can grow them into a sunflower. We all learnt so much and finished the afternoon with a story about Rosie the Engineer who discovered that the best results come after setbacks and mistakes. We felt very inspired.

Science & R.E. Workshop

Date: 9th Oct 2019 @ 4:12pm

Today Year 3 took part in cross-curricular carousel of activities. This included discussing and re-enacting a Baptism where children took different roles such as the Priest, parents and Godparents.  The children learnt about the history of baptism and the signs and symbols used today. This followed a visit from Deacon John on Monday where the children had the opportunity to learn about and smell the oils used in baptism. They were also very lucky to have a visit from Mrs Shaw who taught us about how soil is formed. We learnt about the importance of worms in our soil. The children were able to hold them which they loved! They then talked about the three different rock types and finished with a volcanic eruption.

Clay cave art

Date: 4th Oct 2019 @ 3:54pm

Today we have had a very busy afternoon combining our design technology, art, science and history knowledge. We planned, designed and evaluated our cave art design and then transferred it onto a clay tile that we had created. We also made our own fossil imprints on clay.

St Vincent De Paul Reflection

Date: 27th Sep 2019 @ 1:52pm

Today in school we have been celebrating the a Feast of St Vincent. Every child in the school has decorated a square with a picture of themself or St Vincent and wrote ways they could be like him. Mrs McDuff led a reflection for Year 3 & Year 4. Each child brought their square into the hall and laid it on the floor to form a cross shape. We listened to the reading from ‘The sermon on the mount’ and we discussed how this tells us how we should live to be more like St Vincent and more like Jesus.

Science investigation

Date: 20th Sep 2019 @ 2:40pm

In our science lessons today we carried out a scientific investigation. Using an idea from our ‘Switched on Science’ scheme of work we used ‘sweetie rocks’ to learn about the properties of rocks. We sorted them using criteria such as chalky, soft, hard, layered and stretchy. We discussed how we had sorted our sweets and why. We then moved on to a second science lesson when we sorted real rocks. The children loved these very practical lessons!

Welcome to Year 3

Date: 9th Nov 2018 @ 8:09am

Welcome to Year Three!

We have lots of exciting and different topics to look forward to this year. In History we will be learning about the Stone Age to Iron Age and Ancient Egyptians. In the Stone Age topic we will be researching facts and making our very own clay cave paintings. We will also be writing our own stories based on the 'Stone Age Boy'. In Science we will be learning about our amazing bodies and how to keep healthy. We will also look forward to learning all about rocks, soils and fossils as well as forces and magnets.

As the children will be making their First Holy Communion this year, we will be learning about other Sacraments, such as Baptism. We will come together as a year group and re-enact a Baptism, reflecting on this special event. We will begin to reflect on how we can prepare for the birth of Jesus and why Mary was chosen to do such a special job.

Our focus in Maths will be on place value and developing mental strategies. There is a big focus on times tables in Year 3 and we will be using TT Rockstars to support this. We will be practising telling the time and describing properties of 3D shapes.

In English we will be looking at the 'BFG' and we will write our own narrative with our own giant that we will create. We will perform poetry, focussing on expression, pace and tone. We will also write our own poem based on the 'Magic Box' by Kit Wright. Our grammar focus will be using adverbials of time and place and we will look at prepositions to explain where and when things happen.

We thank you for your continued support and look forward to all the exciting things that Year 3 has to bring.
