Over the last 10 weeks the Year 5 children having been learning to play the trumpet and the tenor horn through the Trafford Music Service. Today was the big concert to show their family and friends what they had been learning and what they are now able to do including playing a wide collection of songs ranging from Batman to Salsa! The children absolutely blew us away with how far they had come through practise and perseverance! They showed themselves to be true examples of growth mindset by embracing the instruments and learning process to become extremely talented and professional performers in such a short amount of time. We are very proud of each and every one of you, well done!

Debates with Miss Carr's class and our Year 1 buddies
Date: 8th Feb 2018 @ 2:50pm
Our School Council representatives have been working hard to prepare a debate on the topic of...
Should we have homework.
Our buddy Year 1 class - Mrs Gerrard/Mrs Burke's class came to join us and listened carefully to the debate.
Esta had some excellent points to make about how we should use our free time to join clubs and spend time with our families after a long day working in school.
Olivia argued that practising work independently at home that we have learnt at school with the teacher gives us more confidence and makes us happier to try new things. She said that we need to get as much time to practise school work as possible to get a good job when we are older.
The vote was very close
28 votes for YES we should have homework
27 votes for NO, we shouldn't have homework
After our careful listening and concentration we had a play outside with our buddies!

Collective Worship - Miss Carr's class
Date: 18th Dec 2017 @ 11:09am
We planned our Advent Collective Worship
Date: 12th Dec 2017 @ 8:39pm
Miss Carr and Mr Blain’s class had the exciting opportunity to visit the Science department at Loreto. Mrs Manton explained that they would work on a project called ‘Shipwrecked’ where they had to complete a practical experiment separating sand, salt and iron. Firstly, they knew that iron was magnetic so they used a magnet to take the iron out of the mixture. Then they added water to the sand and salt mixture. They knew the salt would dissolve in water. Then they filtered their mixture to separate the sand from the salt water. Finally, they boiled the salt mixture to evaporate the water and they were left with salt. As the children finished their work quickly, Mrs Manton gave the children a demonstration of why fireworks are all different colours. She showed us that different elements turn different colours when placed into a flame. The children absolutely loved this and said it was the best part of the trip.
Thank you Mrs Manton!

Our Digital Leaders team has now been set up and is fully established. We have a group of 10 pupils from Year 5 and Year 6 who have been set the task of helping children in our school to stay safe online.
Our team consists of the following representatives:
Year 5 - Andrew, Franzi, Carmel, Alice and Lucas
Year 6 - Eva, Sinead, Victoria, Noel and Aaron
The first task the team were given was to design a poster about staying safe online. You may see some of these on the classroom windows and doors around the Year 5 and 6 corridor. Next, the leaders have designed a survey for their respective year groups and are currently in the process of getting these completed and analysed.
Keep up the hard work Digital Leaders!

The Elephant Thief - Author, Jane Kerr, comes to visit St Vincent's!
Date: 29th Jun 2017 @ 4:28pm
The Year 4, 5 & 6 children were delighted to get the opportunity to meet a real life author yesterday. Jane Kerr, a previous parent at the school, has written a top selling children's book about the exciting journey of a boy and an elephant travelling from Edinburgh to Manchester. As well as hearing the astonishing true story behind the plot of the book they were able to pick up some fantastic writing tips!
We even found out that one of our family's at the school are ancestors of the keeper, Lorenzo Lawrence, who was the real life companion to the elephant, Maharaja, back in 1872. Emma and Jane can be seen below having a special photo taken together to mark the unbelievable connection.
If Jane's visit captured the imagination of your child, 'The Elephant Thief' can still be purchased through school using ParentPay. She has also very kindly offered to visit again before the end of term to sign any copies bought from school or elsewhere.
Jane's visit has certainly inspired some of our children as they have already started writing the first chapter of their own books! Keep going, who knows what the future holds for our talented young authors!
Date: 9th May 2017 @ 2:56pm
