Severe weather guidance
Procedures for Severe Weather
In the event of severe weather conditions, the school will consider the fact that unsafe conditions may prevent pupils and staff from being able to get to school. Furthermore, severe conditions could affect school heating, hot water systems, sanitation, cause burst pipes and floods or prevent the delivery of food for school meals. Occasionally, severe ice and snow makes our playgrounds, paths and side roads dangerous.
1. Severe Weather
In the event of severe weather such as deep/drifting snow, very high winds or widespread flooding, the school may need to close. Parents/carers need to decide if the journey is safe as severe weather may affect transport and/or walking conditions. Parents/carers should inform school if their child is absent due to severe conditions making the school journey unsafe. Please consider this carefully and only keep children at home if conditions are unsafe.
2. Severe weather school closure
St. Vincent’s Catholic Primary School will only close if, following a risk assessment, the safety of pupils and staff is at risk or if heating and sanitation fail. As soon as is reasonably possible, school will communicate this information using the following means of communication:
- Display information on the home page of the school website. www.stvincents.trafford.sch.uk
- Inform parents by email
- Visit www.trafford.gov.uk/schoolclosures
- Visit the official school twitter account
3. Re-opening
We will use the same means of contact as in No.2 above to inform parents/carers that school will re-open.
4. How parents can help
If the children are in school, please can you ensure they wear appropriate warm and waterproof clothing and footwear, and also bring a spare pair of socks.
In case the school should close and parents are able to get to work, it is advisable to make arrangements in advance for the care of your child(ren).
Please refrain from telephoning the school to see if the school is open, all messages will be communicated at the earliest opportunity using the communication detailed in point 2.
Although extreme weather is rare and school closure is the last resort, we thank you in advance for your attention to these procedures.
