Online Safety Assembly by Google

Date: 12th Dec 2018 @ 8:39pm

Today the children in the junior department had a fantastic, interactive assembly by Google. They talked about their new scheme called ‘Be Internet Legends’. This teaches the children about how to stay safe online through five key areas:

Sharp - Think before you share

Alert - Check it’s for real

Secure - Protect your stuff

Kind - Respect each other

Brave - When in doubt, discuss

The children were reminded about how to play the game ‘Interland’ where they can visit different worlds and learn how to stay safe online.

Well done to all the children, you all joined in really well!

How else could we start the day than indulging in a snowman building competition before it melted away!? The children in Mrs Sutton's class showed fanstastic teamwork and resourcefulness to build our wonderful snowman 'Edmund'. We also had great fun doing it!

Today we were lucky enough to have Mrs Shaw visit to carry out an amazing Science lesson that involved the children making their own slime! Our class earned this reward by selling the most raffle tickets for the Christmas Fair. The children and their parents had worked extremely hard to outsell all the other classes and were ecstatic when they were announced to be triumphant at the Christmas Fair! The prize did not disappoint and the children enjoyed a fantastic afternoon as you can see by the photographs. Mrs Shaw will be running another Eco Warriors club next term full of even more equally exciting activities so make sure you sign up in the new year to avoid missing out!

Our team consists of the following representatives:

Year 5 - Andrew, Franzi, Carmel, Alice and Lucas

Next, the leaders have designed a survey for their respective year groups and are currently in the process of getting these completed and analysed.

Keep up the hard work Digital Leaders!

Science Workshop at Loreto with Mrs Sutton’s class

Date: 29th Nov 2017 @ 10:02am

Mrs Sutton’s class had the exciting opportunity to visit the Science department at Loreto. They worked on a project called ‘Shipwrecked’ where they had to complete a practical experiment separating sand, salt and iron. Firstly they knew that iron was magnetic so they used a magnet to take the iron out of the mixture. Then they added water to the sand and salt mixture. They knew the salt would dissolve in water. Then they filtered their mixture to separate the sand from the salt water. Finally they boiled the salt mixture to evaporate the water and they were left with salt. The children said the best part was using the Bunsen burners. Here are some of the pictures from the day.

Cyber bullying with Mrs Sutton’s class

Date: 20th Nov 2017 @ 8:29pm

As part of Anti-bullying week, Year 5 looked at cyber bullying in computing lessons. We watched an emotional video from Britain’s Got Talent where two boys rapped about being bullied. We thought about what we can do if someone is being cyber bullied. Our task was to write a rap of our own giving advice on cyber bullying. Here are some of our raps.

Well done everyone!

'No Pen Wednesday'

At St Vincent's we are a dyslexia friendly school and to celebrate every different type of learning yesterday we took part in 'No Pen Wednesday'. In Year 5 we spent the day enjoying multi-sensory learning through Maths, PE, Art, Music and Spoken Language. In Art we explored colour and tone by experimenting with a range of paints. The artwork is part of a project which is inspired by 'Charles Renee McIntosh' and we can't wait to see what we'll be doing next!

100 Books to Read in Year 5 & 6

Date: 21st Sep 2017 @ 2:03pm

Reading gives your imagination wings! Let them transport you to new worlds and introduce you to amazing people who live exciting lives. Fly away with a good book!

The Year 5 & 6 children are being encouraged to embrace their love of reading by working their way through this list of 100 books. It has been wonderful to see so many children walking around with their head in a book. So many wonderful books to choose from, I wonder if anyone will manage to read them all! Once you've read a book from the list remember to tick your name off on the display that can be found in each of the Year 5 & 6 classrooms. How many will you manage to read this year?

Trafford Junior Neighbourhood Watch Project

Date: 15th Sep 2017 @ 3:09pm

Graham Roe from the Trafford Junior Neighbourhood Watch Project came in today to start working with our Year 5 children. Over the year he will be working with one class each term to help them to understand dangers and situations they may face in their lives including e-safety. We will be carrying out a range of activities to help our children to uphold British values and be good citizens in modern society. Mrs Sutton's class loved their first session and have already come out with all sorts of fantastic ideas!

The Elephant Thief - Author, Jane Kerr, comes to visit St Vincent's!

Date: 29th Jun 2017 @ 4:28pm

The Year 4, 5 & 6 children were delighted to get the opportunity to meet a real life author yesterday. Jane Kerr, a previous parent at the school, has written a top selling children's book about the exciting journey of a boy and an elephant travelling from Edinburgh to Manchester. As well as hearing the astonishing true story behind the plot of the book they were able to pick up some fantastic writing tips!

We even found out that one of our family's at the school are ancestors of the keeper, Lorenzo Lawrence, who was the real life companion to the elephant, Maharaja, back in 1872. Emma and Jane can be seen below having a special photo taken together to mark the unbelievable connection.

If Jane's visit captured the imagination of your child, 'The Elephant Thief' can still be purchased through school using ParentPay. She has also very kindly offered to visit again before the end of term to sign any copies bought from school or elsewhere.

Jane's visit has certainly inspired some of our children as they have already started writing the first chapter of their own books! Keep going, who knows what the future holds for our talented young authors!

Sports Day- UKS2

Date: 26th Jun 2017 @ 4:36pm

Well done to all the children who participated in Sports Day this morning! All children gave it their all and made all of us proud. Congratulations to Miss Hobday's, Mrs Gough's and Mrs O'Keefe's classes who came first.

History Day - World War II

Date: 25th May 2017 @ 4:32pm

Today Year 5 got into the character of evacuee children from World War II. We imagined that we had boarded the train from Altrincham, with our National Identity Cards in hand, to travel to a school in the Peak Distract. Here we would be kept safe and out of harm's way. We were sad to leave our parents behind but excited to see brand new sights in the countryside like cows and sheep! Our new school classroom was arranged in rows and we spent our morning completing arithmetic, handwriting and grammar exercises. In the afternoon we were put to work in the allotments; weeding and planting so we could earn our keep. Certainly not an easy job in the sweltering heat! At least we all managed to avoid the cane!

Meeting the FA Cup!

Date: 9th May 2017 @ 2:56pm

On Monday, we were given the opportunity to meet Premier League referee Anthony Taylor at Altrincham Community Hall.

Anthony has been named as this years FA Cup Final referee and not only did we get to ask him lots of questions, he also brought the actual FA Cup Final Trophy with him!

As you can see it was a great experience for everyone and Anthony give everyone a real insight into life as a referee.

Year 5 Easter Homework Project

Date: 7th Apr 2017 @ 1:36pm

As the Easter holidays will soon be upon us we have given the Year 5 children their Easter homework project a few days early so they can get started this weekend. In the Summer Term we will be learning about World War II and we would like the children to embrace their inner historians and find a way they would like to start learning about this time in history. There are several choices to suit all different types of learners. Which ones will you choose? Or will you come up with your own unique way to share your knowledge?

Remember this is your project so if you would like to adapt the tasks to compliment your individual talents, feel free!

The homework is due in Monday 24th April. We can't wait to see the results!

Maths with a physical twist!

Date: 5th May 2017 @ 9:34am

Friday 7th April was a great day all round! As well as the Easter Eggtravaganza it was own clothes day to bring a close to our Lenten fundraising. To take advantage to this we did a Maths lesson with a physical twist out on the field. The children were split into to teams and had to run, hop and wheelbarrow their way to collect different monetary amounts. Each team had a certain amount of money to spend, they had to quickly find the sum of their shopping and deduct it from the money they started with. It got very competitive but most importantly we all had fun while practising arithmetic!

Robinwood: Forest Group

Date: 5th Apr 2017 @ 4:40pm

Forest Group had a wonderful time at Robinwood, challenging each other to face their fears and take on something new! Sorry for the delay in the pics, as there was a slight issue with technology.  However, they were worth waiting for. Forest Group worked so well as a team, looking out for each other, encouraging each other and letting each other's lights shine.  Well done Forest Group.  As you can see from the pictures, you were truly amazing!

Robinwood - Hill group

Date: 30th Mar 2017 @ 8:28am

A great time has been had by all in Hill group. The group made up a team song on the way and they are now known as 'Hill Llamas'!

Day one consisted of the giant swing, trapeze, quest game and the rocket olympics. We were very proud of their team work. It was a full day and the children settled quite early after hot chocolate and team games.

Day two and we've had a fantastic day.  We started with archery then the crate challenge and after a satisfying lunch headed for the climbing wall followed by canoeing and caving. In the evening we did the night line and were targeted by lots of naughty squirrels!

Day three has started with a challenge activity - an assault course that provided us with a physical challenge and tested our team work skills. Climbing is next followed by the giant zipwire so we're really finishing on a high! What a fantastic trip - we've made so many memories.
