Author Jo Welch visits KS2
Local author Jo Welch visited the Year 5 and 6 children this morning. She lives in Heaton Moor in Stockport. After graduating in Chemistry from Oxford she was employed in various marketing management roles, but after having children, has focused on raising her family, caring for her parents and writing.
Jo told us about her fascinating life and successful career inspired by her love of reading. She also loves writing, science, reading detective fiction and doing puzzles (which is why there are lots in her first book - The Einstein Code).
At St. Vincent's we are always looking at ways to improve our writing. Jo demonstrated we must always "Show not Tell" and said we could use the "Malorie Blackman structure" for writing stories. Why not try it next time you write:-
Start story with a trigger - A BANG!
Quest
Surprise
Give hero a critical choice
End with a BLAST!
Possibly have a resolution
Jo asked us to use the Caesar code to solve some puzzles. We had to work out whether to shift forward or back a certain number of spaces. We really enjoyed listening to Jo and cracking her codes.
Thank you for your visit, we are excited about reading your first novel - The Einstein Code!
