Music
Intent
The intent of our Music curriculum is to
- Help children to feel that they are musical and to develop a life-long interest in music.
- Focus on developing the skills, knowledge and understanding that children need in order to become confident and creative performers and listeners.
- Introduce children to music from around the world and across generations, teaching children to respect and appreciate the music of different traditions and communities.
How Music links with our school values:
Be Kind - We work collaboratively and positively evaluate the work of ourselves and others, understanding that responses can be varied and valid.
Be Respectful - We develop respect and tolerance for others by learning about different genres and cultures.
Be Passionate about Learning - We challenge ourselves to develop our performance skills.
Make a Difference - We develop our musical skills to celebrate our talents, we use these to make a difference to those around us.
At St Vincent’s we aspire to make the learning ambitious for all learners. Our school curriculum includes the knowledge, skills and life experiences children need to thrive. Our learning is carefully planned and sequenced using the National Curriculum that can be found below:
Knowledge and skills are built on from previous years and there is clear progression in each subject. You can see an overview of progression below:

Each curriculum area is taught across the year and evidenced on a long term plan, divided into half termly blocks. You can see the long term plan below:

Music Developments Spring 2024
Each child is given the opportunity to experience Music in hymn practices, weekly lessons, opportunities to perform and exposure to different genres in the classroom. The children are encouraged to:
- Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a breadth of historical periods.
- Learn to use their voices expressively through singing. They are able to compose their own music alongside their peers and learn how to develop their voices.
- Explore the musical creation process and develop their awareness of the inter-related dimensions such as: pitch, duration, dynamics, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.
In addition to our classroom based offer, we have a wide range of Music lessons delivered by specialist teachers. The music teachers come into school once a week and offer paired or individual twenty minute lessons for the guitar, violin, piano, or wind instrument.
