During Science Day we had a visit from Dr Nick who came in to show Year 2 some amazing science activities. We used motors and magnets and had lots of fun! Throughout the day we made towers out of newspaper and tried to build the tallest structure which could hold a ball. It was very tricky! We also discovered what it was like to be a Polar animal and the effect of a fat layer to keep warm in very cold climates.

This week we have been thinking about how we can be a better friend as well as remembering to show care and respect to everyone we meet. Today Mrs Gough/O'Keefe's class designed some fun fitness activities for Year 3 buddies in Miss Slater's class. This was helped by our class love of "5 a day fitness" which we enjoy as we come into school in the morning.
Some of our exercises included: The Grapevine groove, Bangra bends and balance, Turn and twist, Superstars and Stretch sprints. The Year 3 children watched and listened carefully to their Year 6 teachers. We had so much fun keeping fit together; despite the chilly afternoon we were very warm once we had finished!
How do you keep fit? Can you design some of your own fun exercises to get your body moving?

Remember- all children in years 3-6 are welcome to join in at the cross country events. See the calendar for the dates and locations.

Mrs Farrell's class have had a busy time since September. They enjoyed meeting their year 3 buddies, had fun at the Marist Centre and learnt lots about Australia on United Nations Day.
Date: 22nd Oct 2016 @ 9:24am
The Year 6 children really enjoyed learning about Australia. We learnt about the geography of the country and the climate, as well as the aboriginal people. Did you know that Australia has many species of animals found nowhere else in the world? Using what we read and our research, we made fascinating fact booklets about animals such as the platypus and the deadly taipan snake!
After the school bunting parade we prepared some Australian food while listening to didgeridoo music. Fairy bread is a party treat for children - although it was very sweet most of us really enjoyed it. We also sampled Vegemite spread but that wasn't so popular!
Have you tried Vegemite? What do you know about Australia?

This Friday 7 October we begin our harvest fundraising with CAFOD Family Fast Day supporting families in Bolivia. During this Year of Mercy, Pope Francis has asked us to rediscover the corporal works of mercy, one of which is to feed the hungry. Families in Bolivia face many challenges in growing enough food. It is the poorest country in South America and many Bolivians, especially children, are malnourished. The climate is changing and the weather is unpredictable. Sometimes devastating hailstorms or heavy frosts destroy crops. At other times there is not enough rain. These conditions make it incredibly tough to grow food, meaning many families go hungry.
CAFOD is asking us to ‘Brighten up this Harvest’ so Friday 7 October will be a non-uniform day. We ask that children dress in their brightest clothes and accessories for a suggested donation of £1 to support communities in Bolivia to grow enough food for themselves, by providing seeds and training in farming methods and by teaching people how to build greenhouses.
In recognition of Friday 7 October being Family Fast Day we ask that the junior children give up their morning snack on that day and that the infant children be encouraged to give up a treat at home. All children will be learning about the work of CAFOD at school on this day.
During harvest time, we also support the work of Cornerstone, a day centre in Manchester providing services to adults facing a wide range of social issues including homelessness, poverty, social isolation, poor mental health and substance addiction.
From Monday 17 October until Wednesday 19 October we will be collecting donations of food items – the centre is always very grateful for most tinned foods or dry goods, in particular tea, coffee and corned beef. You can drop your donations off at the classroom or either department office during these times. If you can help with the transportation of goods, please let us know.
Thank you in advance for your generosity. We are always overwhelmed by the support of our families. We look forward to welcoming parents to the Junior Harvest Mass on Wednesday 19 October at 9:05am and the parents of Mr.Nicholls’ class to the Harvest Liturgy on the same morning.

St. Vincent's revelled in another bright and sunny afternoon as we celebrated our end of year school Mass, led by Father Martin and celebrating the 'Bee-atitudes'. Every class made a Bee Hive with each child in the school contributing a Bee to our wonderful display, highlighting all of the ways we follow the beatitudes.
All of the children spoke and sang beautifully and Father Martin recalled lots of the stories that he has shared with us throughout the year. We even sang 'If You're Happy and You Know It'! Father Martin reminded us how important family time was during our summer break and told the children to spend every moment they could playing with their parents and families.
Father John and Deacon John also enjoyed celebrating mass and as you can see from the pictures, all of the children and staff enjoyed taking part too alongside all of the many parents, siblings and grandparents who were able to join us in a wonderful and reflective service.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and may we wish you all a safe and happy Summer break.

The Year 6 children had great fun celebrating their time at St. Vincent's at their Leavers' disco. The hall looked amazing and they were welcomed by a red carpet, photographer and delicious "mocktails". There was lots of dancing, food and entertainment before the grand balloon drop/confetti cannon finale. Thanks to everyone who made the night so special, especially the group of parents who did a fantastic job leading the organisation. Two weeks to go...

Local author Jo Welch visited the Year 5 and 6 children this morning. She lives in Heaton Moor in Stockport. After graduating in Chemistry from Oxford she was employed in various marketing management roles, but after having children, has focused on raising her family, caring for her parents and writing.
Jo told us about her fascinating life and successful career inspired by her love of reading. She also loves writing, science, reading detective fiction and doing puzzles (which is why there are lots in her first book - The Einstein Code).
At St. Vincent's we are always looking at ways to improve our writing. Jo demonstrated we must always "Show not Tell" and said we could use the "Malorie Blackman structure" for writing stories. Why not try it next time you write:-
Start story with a trigger - A BANG!
Quest
Surprise
Give hero a critical choice
End with a BLAST!
Possibly have a resolution
Jo asked us to use the Caesar code to solve some puzzles. We had to work out whether to shift forward or back a certain number of spaces. We really enjoyed listening to Jo and cracking her codes.
Thank you for your visit, we are excited about reading your first novel - The Einstein Code!
